Proposed Filtered Permeability Trial for Bellfield Gardens

(No-Through Road from Thomond Row to Ennis Road except cyclists)

Dear Resident/Business,

Limerick City & County Council have received numerous submissions regarding transport-related issues on Bellfield Gardens including cut-through traffic.

In October 2022, our Metro North Councillors supported a proposal from the Active Travel Team to to implement a filtered permeability trial on Bellfield Gardens to determine the impacts of the measures on traffic movements and to establish if there is support for the measures from local residents and stakeholders.

The trial will include the provision of a series of cones/bollards and/or temporary planters with appropriate traffic road markings and signage placed along High Road and Thomond Row. It is proposed that the trial would commence at 6am on 1st November 2022 and run until 6pm 22nd November 2022. Please see a sketch of the proposed measures below.

The impact of this measure will be that motorised cut-through traffic will be eliminated on Bellfield Gardens so that drivers will no longer be able to use this route as a short-cut from High Road to Ennis Road.

Filtered permeability through the cones/bollards will enable pedestrians and cyclists to continue to take this route. Access through the cones/bollards will be maintained for emergency vehicles.

The reduction in motorised traffic will result in a safer space for pedestrians and cyclists travelling along this route, and is hoped will help create a safer and more liveable area for residents of Bellfield Gardens.

A 2 week non-statutory public consultation has commenced from 10th October to 24th October 2022 to gather feedback on these proposals via Limerick City & County Council’s MyPoint Consultation Hub (visit https://mypoint.limerick.ie/), or you can email your feedback to activetravel@limerick.ie.

Note: A Traffic Management Plan will be implemented and maintained for the duration of the trial with advance warning signage on Thomond Row & High Road.

Thank you for your time and your interest on this subject.
