Garryowen Community Centre

Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP) is making this submission in our capacity as an advocate for the socially marginalised area of Limerick City South – to state our concern at the absence in the draft Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028 of the urgent need for a Limerick City & County Council funded Community Centre in Garryowen.

LEDP is a Roxboro based charity, now 21 years in existence and emerged from the ashes of the devastating closure of the famous Krups factory in 1998 with the loss of 500 jobs. Its purpose was to supports social and economic inclusion in disadvantaged communities. The LEDP building is a total of 169,000 sq. ft. in size with multiple tenants in sectors commercial, charity, training and upskilling, and education. All revenue is put back into the community in various initiatives. LEDP has in that time used its commercial rental income successfully to contribute to the social fabric of Limerick City through job creation, advocacy, training, and education provision and is a key stimulator for enterprise development and regeneration in socially marginalised and excluded areas. There are now 35 enterprises and 1,000 jobs on site in Roxboro with over €70M invested there since 2001. By continuing to work in cohesion and partnership, the objectives set out in our new bold Strategy can be realised, and thus ensure the Mid-West Region is a place where everyone can benefit from.
