Litir Chumhdaigh

I live on South Circular Road on the Crescent side of Lifford Avenue with my 3 primary school aged children and my husband.

We are delighted to see the proposal for more pedestrian and cycle friendly roads, linking up South Circular Road with the cycle lanes in Dooradoyle and to the cycle lanes across the Shannon Bridge.

We sincerely hope these plans will become a reality, providing the infrastructure to encourage more young and old people to walk, run and cycle in and out of the city, to school and reducing the use of personal cars within the city, particularly for those who do not live in the city.

I would also like to see along with these plans, options for people to park on the outskirts of the city with the option of taking short commuter buses into the city centre - this would be particularly useful for teenagers who are currently dropped from outside the city into schools in the city centre.

I appreciate the concerns for elderly residents who do not have off street parking - if there was a full block at the SCR/Lifford Avenue junction instead of just a half barrier, I believe this could enable more parking to be included as the overall traffic on the road would be reduced.

I also believe that making Henry street one way all the way with a two way cycle lane would potentially allow for more parking and alleviate worries of residents and business owners there.

Thoughts around plans at Lifford Avenue

Living on the section of road between Ballinacurra/SCR junction and Lifford avenue/SCR junction, I cannot see cars being deterred by putting barriers half way across the SCR road at the Lifford avenue/SCR junction - as it is two way on both sides of this junction in SCR, cars will treat the barrier like a parked car and just manouvere around the barrier and continue on their journey.

A full block here or blocking the lane coming down off the bridge at the Ballinacurra/SCR junction would function better at reducing the number of people that use the SCR as a rat run.

Main opinion:

This is so important to future proof our city and enable more people to walk and cycle around the city and link the different sides of the city to each other.

Main requests:

Consider a full block at the SCR/Lifford Avenue junction.

Main reasons:

People will just manouvere around the proposed barrier as is.
