Chapter 2 - Planning Report and Drawings

One disappointing aspect of the proposal is the lack of inclusion of safe crossing points in the form of either zebra crossings or traffic-lighted crossings at points surrounding the school where path continuance has been included (Clontarf Place, O'Curry Street, St. Gerard's Street and St. Alphonsus Street).  Please consider including this in your final plans as it would greatly enhance safety during our school community’s daily commute.

We performed a parental survey covering our 217 student population earlier this year whose findings showed that almost half of our students walk to school daily.  Three quarters of respondents found that road safety in the vicinity of the school was a persistent issue with almost all surveyed in support of works that would improve walking and cycling approach routes to the school.  Please feel free to contact us for further information regarding this survey.

Main opinion:

Limerick School Project’s board broadly supports improvements to active travel arrangements in Limerick City. Limerick City and County Council should be commended for their efforts to date.

Specifically related to the “Part 8 - South Circular Road to City Centre Active Travel Scheme” surrounding the school, we see some very welcome plans to improve and widen paths and especially the plans for path continuance at road crossings at Clontarf Place, O'Curry Street, St. Gerard's Street and St. Alphonsus Street. This will greatly improve safety for children on approach routes to the school and we sincerely hope it survives to implementation by the council.
