Chapter 2 - Planning Report and Drawings

The termination of the cycle lane at Bishops quay will lead to an increase in the number of cyclists crossing the Bishops quay roadway at the bottom of Mill lane. I believe many cyclists that currently use Dock Road and Lwr Mallow Street to access the cycle lane on shannon bridge, as well as new users, will in future use the Henry Street and Mill lane cycle lanes to access the brigde once these are in place. The effect will be a large number of cyclists crossing from Mill Lane onto the river side of Bishops quay, and walking their bikes to the cycle lane on Shannon bridge. The footpath on shannon bridge is already quite narrow, and not suitable for additional footfall especially with people pushing bikes.

An easy solution would be to provide an easier access/egress to/from the shannon bridge, and this would require only a very small extension of the existing cycle lanes on shannon bridge to continue 20m into Bishops quay. Ideally then provision should be made by way of controlled light crossing for both cyclists and pedestrians to cross from the river side of bishops quay over to the bottom of mill lane.

This would in effect create the longest continuous cycle corridor in Limerick city, conecting Jetland shopping centre to Raheen Inustrial estate with cycle lanes continuously in direction of Raheen, and with combined cycle lanes and cycle+bus lane in Raheen to Jetland direction, over 8km of active travel corridor.
