Chapter 2 - Planning Report and Drawings

In a nutshell, this is a route I had been waiting for ever since I relocated to the Dooradoyle area. Having spent majority of my time in Limerick City in and around Dooradoyle, I feel that this route brings life to the usual commute for many people.

Pros :

  • Helps connect Dooradoyle area to city center, though, Raheen is internally connected to Dooradoyle other than the main road, this would actually encourage bicycle commuters to take out their bicycle more often for a safer commute. It ensures that this end of the city is connected with the center.
  • lack of cycling lane commuting between the city center and Raheen had often proven to be dangerous near the Mount Gerrard's court and punches cross - the SCR route helps overcome this.
  • Filtered permeability at Lifford junction does seem to be a great improvement.
  • Mary I and the surrounding school/institutional area can benefit well by this scheme as many young students would like to commute on their bicycle to school, and people to run small quick errands to the city center. Perhaps having a few bicycle stands would help the local businesses and commuters who stop by for some work in and around the area.
  • Henry Street / Mallow Street - a good thought has been given as per the plan around this area near the Spar, as the current situation requires pedestrians to cross twice and co-ordinate accordingly to get to the other side no matter which side one is coming from. The new plan, not only helps overcome it, but the continuation of the cycle lane all the way to Mill Lane to connect with Bishop's Quay is a great improvement in terms of commute.

Cons :

  • The left turn at the Crescent Shopping Center coming from the city can be very dangerous as the left cycle lane just ends up on this entrance and many vehicles turn in towards the Shopping Center. This can potentially be dangerous, we do have 3 more entrances to the Crescent Shopping Center, one very close to this one, we can hence request for this one to be closed for vehicles.
  • There are numerous vehicles that are parked on the SCR by the residents; this is not depicted very accurately in the plan, It is required to be considered as a crucial factor while drafting an effective plan, as the real-estate is important to accommodate the current parking arrangements as well as for considering a lane for bicycles here.
  • The crossing coming from the Baggot Estate near Ballinacurra Close just before the fly-over of the Crescent shopping center definitely needs to be considered while looking at the connectivity.

As the pros outweigh the cons, this plan does seem to favour a new bicycle connectivity and rejuvenate the city center with green traffic coming to it. But the considerations on the Cons are serious ones - It must be looked into!

Main opinion:

Support the plan;

Main requests:

Fix for :- Dangerous left turn towards Crescent SC; Parking real-estate to be considered for SCR;

Main reasons:

Good connectivity from the Raheen side to the city center by bicycle. A well thought plan.
