Litir Chumhdaigh

Look at what's happening in Paris. How quickly the locals have adopted and embraced cycling once the infrastructure was in place. I find it strange that even writing this submission as it seems like a no brainer. Limerick is not Paris..... or Amsterdam, or Munich, or Copenhagen. But Limerick is not unique or an outlier either in terms of demographics, population, climate, or urban form. We need to learn from these places. These cities have become more liveable as a result of the uptake in cycling. This scheme is essential to provide a sustainable, healthy and community focused alternative to the private car for residents of Raheen, Dooradoyle, and Limerick City West. The proposed design can be better and in-line with best in class designs but I am willing to look past that now and just deliver the current scheme and improve later. Its importance to the growth of the city centre, to our climate obligations, and to the wellbeing of our city can not be overstated. This is not a radical proposal and should have been in pace years ago. Limerick needs infrastructure like this if it wants to be considered a modern and liveable city.

Tuairimí

Limerick Council's commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

Mobility is an essential element of development strategies that aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Meeting the needs of people who cycle continues to be a critical part of the mobility solution for helping cities de-couple population growth from increased emissions, and to improve air quality and road safety. This scheme is essential to provide a sustainable, healthy and community focussed alternative to the private car for residents of Limerick City West.

Main opinion:

Cycling infrastructure in critical

Main requests:

Deliver the scheme quickly

Main reasons:

This route is one of the essential primary spurs of the Limerick Metropolitain Cycle Network and will link a quarter of the population to the city centre. Its importance to the growth of the city centre, to our climate obligations and to the wellbeing of our city can not be overstated.
