Safe infrastructure for cyclists of Limerick

I would like to share my support for the development of Part 8 – South Circular Road to Active Travel Scheme.

As a former Crescents Shopping Center worker living at Clancy Strand I must emphasise the importance of a safe segregated cycle line at South Circular Road. Almost every day for four years it was my main route for cycling from work. I would have also cycled to work this way except that it was a one-way and this meant I had to cycle on O’Connell Avenue and Ballinacurra Road, which is also dangerous.

It is important that there is a safe segregated cycle lane especially while passing Mary Immaculate College. There is a risk of collision between drivers and cyclists as the street is very narrow in that point and some drivers do not understand the concept of equality of cyclist and a driver on the shared road. I have encountered multiple dangerous situations such as being pushed to the curb, drivers not keeping safe distance while over-taking and verbal abuse suggesting I get off the road. I would like to point out that I cycle with high visibility pannier bag and very visible LED lights on the back and front of my bicycle which are always turned on.

In conclusion, commuting without safe and well-designed cycling infrastructure is not only very stressful for cyclists and drivers alike, but more importantly it is dangerous and has no place in a developed society and modern city. Providing a safe infrastructure so the most vulnerable members of our community (children, elderly, financially disadvantaged) can safely move around is absolutely essential and should be a priority.
