In favour of the SCR Part 8 scheme being enacted in its entirety

I'm completely in favour of the scheme as proposed.

While there are some small concerns (the continued indulgence in believing that shared spaces are safe for anyone, for example), the proposed improvements in the SCR plan are beneficial for pretty much everyone.

• Locals get a safer street, with drastically lowered levels of traffic and rat-running.

• Schools and the local college gain safe transit.

• People passing along the SCR & the section of Henry Street included in the plan also gain better & safer paths, and, again, a dramatically safer route for travelling in or out of the city.

• It also encourages healthy, active travel, beneficial for the people using the improved route through better health, beneficial for the city through lowered emissions, and beneficial for the planet.

As someone who uses various routes to and from Dooradoyle on a regular basis, I would very happily cycle along a safe route were it available. At the moment, there is no safe 24/7 trunk route available to cyclists along any route from the city centre to Dooradoyle. Thus, cycling isn't an option. This plan makes that possible. It isn't just advantageous for the groups I mentioned above. It's massively beneficial for all age groups across a quarter of the city.

I also regularly encounter people cycling along the paths along that route and on O'Çonnell Ave/Ballinacurra Road. While this is unsafe for pedestrians, the vast majority of these people don't want to cycle on pedestrian paths. They want to use safe, segregated cycle paths. Again, this plan provides that.

The best time to implement this plan would have been twenty years ago. But the second best time is right now.
