Baggot Estate Active Travel Scheme

Limerick City & County Council, supported by National Transport Authority, are bringing forward an active travel scheme to improve pedestrian and cycle linkage between R526 Ballinacurra Rd and Rosbrien Rd through the Baggot Estate Nature Park. The scheme provides orbital connectivity as part of the wider active network, linking directly with South Circular Road and providing connectivity with other routes identified in LSMATS Proposed Cycle Network.

The objectives of the scheme include:

  • Improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure
  • Creation of an Active Travel East – West link
  • Increase existing residential, educational and leisure amenity in the area
  • Enhance the attractiveness of walking and cycling for short trips

Options are being considered to develop this attractive amenity to include Active Travel measures.

Route 1: Provides a direct east-west connection between existing facilities at Ballinacurra Road to Rosbrien Road, along the southern part of Baggot Estate Nature Park, through Ballinacurra Gael Lands and along the flood defence scheme.

Route 1A: Follows the same alignment as Route 1 through Baggot Estate Nature Park and Ballinacurra Gael Lands, and then joins with Ballinacurra Garden Estate to connect with Rosbrien Road.

Route 2: Follows the route of existing recreational paths within Baggot Estate Nature Park that will need to be widened to facilitate shared use, then runs through Ballinacurra Gael Lands and Ballinacurra Estate to connect with Rosbrien Road.

Route 3: Provides a direct east-west connection between existing facilities at Ballinacurra Road and Rosbrien Road, using N18 road reserve and flood defence scheme which lie outside Baggot Estate Nature Park.

Route 4: Makes use of new and existing paths within Baggot Estate Nature Park, then runs through Ballinacurra Gael Lands and Ballinacurra Estate to connect with Rosbrien Road.
